About the Author
Don Holm was born in North Dakota in 1918 where he attended grade and high schools. Later he attended the Univ of Texas, Portland State Univ, Multnomah College and Lewis and Clark College. From 1936 to 1941 he traveled widely, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

My got this book for my mom to send to a friend in Australia that has started using sourdough. My mom actually has this book already and wanted to give one to her friend. She was excited to get it and see how good of shape it was in. She really like how it was spiral bound, unlike hers.
I have had this cookbook since the 1970's, and bought this one for my mother-in-law, who recently decided to try making sourdough bread. I enjoy the folksy stories and great recipes.
My wife saw a recommendation for this book, so we bought it. She has read it through and thorougly ejoyed it, since it provides more sourdough recipes in one place, than elsewhere. It's a 1982 book, so costs more than its original cover price to find in decent shape (ours was purchased "used" but in great shape). It is written by an outdoorsman, based on many recepes he's gathered and tried or experienced in years of travel. We look forward to trying many of the recepies that appear easy to make.
I have only had the time to try a couple of the recipes. Very happy with the results. Looking forward to trying many more.
I purchased this for a friend, as I have enjoyed this book since 1977, when I purchased it for myself. My friend was so enthralled with my book, that I went in search for one for him, and was very pleased to find it and in excellent condition...he has since dropped me a line to let me know that he has enjoyed many of the recipes out of the book and is thrilled to have it...it arrived in record time and as I said in excellent condition......very delighted with the purchase...w.
Too many historical stories. Have not made any of the recipes. Wonder if they're suitable for our 'modern' environment. Also disappointed that the seller did not take the time to actually look at the book's condition before rating it.
I recently read a dozen books on sourdough and this is the only one I chose to purchase. Don and Myrtle (co-conspirators of the book) did a fantastic job, combining history, humor, good recipes, and clear instructions. As far as I'm concerned, this is the only sourdough book I'll ever need. Highly recommended.
Recommended by mother-in-law she has always had sour dough starter going. When I asked how to start mine she said this was "the book". Have read a good portion of it and enjoyed it. Can't wait to start the sour dough this winter.
