This was definitely a fun book with a very inventive style. While parts felt like they weren't fully fleshed out, the story was always interesting and enjoyable to read through.Honestly, I'd probably give this 3.5 stars, but I rounded up because of the sheer uniqueness of the book; you'll never read another one like it. Definitely worth the read.
I didn't get into this book as much as I did Cantero's last two English language books, The Supernatural Enhancements and Meddling Kids: A Novel. However the reason for this likely lies in the fact that Cantero loves to change the style and form of how he writes for each book. While they share some similarities, each is different enough that you could probably hand these books to someone with different names on them and they may not guess that they're by the same person. For me, that's why it's so easy to recommend his books to people - if you don't like one, odds are you'll probably get into one of the others. Long story short though, while I didn't really get into the book I still found it enjoyable enough. One of the things I really did like about the book was its central conceit: that two people are sharing the same body. It's something that Cantero dabbled in for his last book, Meddling Kids, but is played a little more straightforward here. Or maybe not as straightforward, as it's Cantero and very few things with his work are truly straightforward and what they seem: there's always something hidden to discover until the last pages are turned. The Supernatural Enhancements is an excellent example of that, which is why it's probably my favorite book of the three. So the question is whether or not you should get this. Well, if you've liked his work so far I'd say to go for it. It's definitely worth checking out. If not, I'd still recommend it, albeit maybe as a library read or to flip through it at the bookstore first. My only true regret for this is that it's not being released in a pulp-style paperback first, but that's a personal style preference as far as any crime related novels go. There's just something about cheap paperback formats that really add to the overall pleasure aspect of reading those types of works.
This is, in many ways, a new take on an old genre. First and foremost, the, uh, 'condition' of the protagonists. I'm not sure i've seen this take on the buddy-cop-type trope before. There's also the fact that Adrien and Zoe are extremely genre-savvy, so there are no eye-rolling moments of noir cliche, at least none that aren't immediately turned into something else. There's also a bit of category-mixing, mostly early in the book, with a bit of screenplay-formatting to set certain scenes. I'm not a huge fan of that, but it does make sense in context. So, does it work? Yeah, more or less. The A/Z tug-of-war has occasional moments of 'because plot', but the author does a splendid job of setting up the ending with bits and pieces scattered through the book that the reader probably won't even notice as vital pieces of the conclusion until the last few pages of the book. I always love a book that can do that.
A while back I reviewed a book (no name necessary) that strove to be a take-off on pulp/noir novels in a sy(ish) fi(ish) setting. I was not impressed because, in trying too hard it missed the point almost entirely. This marvel of a book doesn't appear to be trying at all, which is why it hits every note perfectlyHaving said that, I should tell you what it's about. But I can't.I KNOW, don't get me wrong, I KNOW what it's about and Cantero is quite brilliant at making it clear what it's about. But if I even tried to tell you what this man of magical words pulls off, you'd put me into a soft room wearing a VERY long sleeved jacket and you still wouldn't understand what I was saying until you read it for yourself which would make my telling you unnecessary to begin withMake it simple; if you want to read something UNIQUE with a capital u, and n, and i, and q and u (another one, not the first one) and e, this is for you (or u)
