I had heard an interview of the author by Diane Rehm on NPR one morning and just had to get this book. Personally, I have several 40+ year friendships and I wanted to see if the girls from Ames had similar experiences. The answer is yes. There's no friendship like a long, endearing one that survives lifes ups and downs. I passed this book along to another friend who was leaving for her 20th "girlfriends reunion" with 3 former grade school classmates. They read it aloud during their weekend together and loved it as much as I did.
As an Iowa girl from Dubuque and about 18 years older than these girls I was pleased that they mirrored my own youth so well. I found the analysis of their relationships and how some felt on the periphery to be interesting. Though I wasn't a college girl in the early 70's, the social changes of legal abortions and feminism affected me also. The difference is that these girls didn't seem to realize how sterotypical roles were for women before the 70's. Why would they? They weren't born until 1962. The need for women friends seems to be universal and timeless. The need for friends that go back to when you were young is important because your parents die and they were the only ones that remembered you as a child unless you have these childhood friends still.
Such a good book about female friendships as lived by these childhood friends from IA. Zaslow did a fantastic job chronicling the depth and breadth of their relationships, how they grew and shrunk from time to time, but most importantly how vitally important it has been to each and every one of them to keep in touch and be there for one another through thick and thin. I've recommended the book to several people, and gifted it to a couple of friends I hold close from my own childhood.
This book was very enjoyable as it brought several of my friends to mind. There were many great truths revealed about characteristics of friendship which are truly exclusive to women. It was amazing so many women stayed friends for so long. Rarely do people keep in touch with childhood friends for life, or new friendships form such deep bonds.I have recommended the book to several friends.Although the author made a heroic effort to understand women in this capacity, I feel the book would have had more emotional depth if it had been written by a woman. The interviews were conducted with obvious respect for the Ames women(and women in general for that matter). In addition the scaredness of friendship was acknowledged. It was well worth the read even if a man did write it!!
I was told about this book and decided to get it from the library. When I started reading it I didn't think it applied to me since I grew up in the fifties and not the eighties like the ladies in the book. But once I really got into it I could relate to the women and how their frienships endured. I have kept in touch with a few friends from high school and that has been almost fifty years and we are still really good friends and this book made me realize how important those friendships are. I enjoyed the book very much. I have since bought a copy to give to one of my friends so they will related also to the importance of keeping in touch with your old friends and how much that means.
Had to read this book as we have a "Club" named "8 + 1." which has been in existence for about 45 to 50 years. We didn't all go to college, but we all have similar back grounds and even though we are all different, we have always gotten along fine and have had loads of fun. We don't play cards, we just do whatever is suggested by the host for that month. And whether it is dressing up like a clown, or a witch, or come in our special designed Easter Bonnets, everyone has to go along and we usually all do! We are all each others sounding boards and are great therapy for each other. That is why I enjoyed the book so much, as I could relate! I think the author should write a book about our story!
I bought this book thinking it would be a good summer read but was disappointed overall. Yes, it is a story of friendship that has spanned decades but I can't find anything unique or greatly interesting about these womens' lives that I can't find at a neighborhood coffee morning. While I agree that childhood friendships are very precious, I just didn't see the difference between these women and so many others I know.It was also hard to keep everyone's stories straight because of the large number of characters involved and the similarities of their stories.
The overall message of the beauty of friendships is clear, but I had difficulty keeping track of who was who. I found it difficult to really care for any one character. Many of the details, like names and behaviors of their children, lost my interest. It also seemed that the author was attempting to use the voice and language of the girls.
