This begins as the story of a man, Charles James, who starts out from humble beginnings and ends up making millions. He has had an abusive childhood and, thankfully, seems to have spared the curse of becoming abusive in his turn. Charles, for all that he seems to have everything, has come to realize that he is really empty and has nothing of true value.The “author†of the book has traveled Route 66 looking for inspiration for his next novel. At the end of the journey, when he realizes that he has not found what he was looking and expecting to find, he comes across a dusty and dirty hiker who looks vaguely familiar. When he realizes who the hiker is (Charles), they agree that the author will possibly be given the rights to tell the hiker's story. This book is the first in those tales. As the story is told by way of a look backward through the pages of Charles' journal, it is more autobiographical than biographical in nature.This first book in a new trilogy looks far back into Charles life and shows us a young boy who learns to fight to survive. It is due to these abusive years that Charles turns his back on God and decides that he is his own god. The events described in his younger years are enough to make one weep while reading. We follow his life through the point when he realizes making money is not the same as making a joyful life. The book ends when he is given a truly undeserved chance to start again, to reboot and, hopefully, find a life of true and lasting value.While this is the first book I have read by Richard Paul Evans, it will certainly not be the last. I felt as if I knew the man the story was written about. I cheered when he overcame obstacles and felt sad and disappointed for him when he felt made unwise decisions and yielded to temptations that could destroy his life. In other words, Richard Paul Evans made this character come alive to me. I will be waiting (anxiously) for the second book in this series to be released.
As I read this story, I was surprised (although not disappointed) to find out that this story was not a completely fictional story. It is based loosely on the true story of a man under the alias of Charles James, with the main character telling and reflecting on his life, his rise and fall from grace.Despite Charles making some wrong turns in life as he got older, due to understanding his early life in the beginning of the story, he always remained a likeable and sympathetic character to me. There was a sort of innocence to him in the actions his took, although some can be seen as unforgiveable. But in the end, I easily connected with him and was really rooting for things to turn around for him at the end.And that’s where I will enter my only disappointment with the story. I felt like it ended in a sort of cliffhanger. In the end, Charles saw his opportunity to have a second chance at life, but as a reader, I didn’t get to discover what he made of it—what became of him. And that’s because, since this story is based on a true story, the actual Charles James was still figuring that out as the author made it clear. So I won’t knock down the story for that because despite the cliffhanger ending, as a reader, I got something valuable from it. Not only was I entertained, but I got another view on how easily life can steer one in the wrong direction, causing one to lose everything that matters, but on the positive side, how that wrong direction can open one’s eyes to what really matters. It was a good story all in all. I hope the author stays in touch with the man called Charles James and lets the readers know what became of his second chance.
Charles James is not exactly a likable character, but then again--He warns you of this in the beginning of the book. There are a couple of things that bother me about him. First of all, he has had a difficult and abusive childhood--You would think that this would make him a sensitive and empathetic adult. It doesn't, not really. He is arrogant, self-important, insensitive and egocentric. He meets and falls in love with Monica, but she is with a boyfriend that treats her in an abusive and humiliating way. He ultimately convinces her to leave him, and then goes on to threaten this guy in the same abusive and humiliating way. It's not that the guy doesn't deserve it, it's just that it makes Charles a penultimate hypocrite. He had to "dumpster-dive" as a child. He knows what it's like to be poor. I suppose this is the driving force behind his quest for money and success, and his climb to success is unfettered by concern or sympathy for those he may need to crush and step on to achieve this success. Okay, so maybe this is the point. This guy goes on a journey of self-discovery and becomes a better man. It's a good story. It's well-written. But why does it need to be a series of books? Can't the author take us on a journey from here to there is one novel? Wally Lamb has done this, and done this remarkable well in many of his books without needing to turn it a series of novels. Seems like a cheat and a money grab to me. So if you purchase this novel, be aware that you are only getting a piece of the story. If you want the whole thing, you will have to shell out some 30 plus dollars to get it. A story that could have been told in one novel.
Mr Evans never disappoints! This story makes me grateful, that I was blessed with good, honorable parents.This story makes your heart ache for this man. It also keeps you wanting the best for him, only to want nothing more than to smack him a good one for the selfish & poor choices he makes. Especially when those choices hurt those who truly care for him. I was glued to the story from start to finish. My regret however, is that I have to wait a year to see what happens next! Dang!
As always I very much enjoy Richards books. This one was no exception and I can start on the next one immediately because I always wait till they come out so I don’t have that time lapse before getting into the next one. My only comment really is he dedicates this book to the man whose true story it is about and that gentleman said that he wishes God will forgive him someday. Well God will forgive you when you ask for his forgiveness when you truly repent of your sins and turn and follow His will His Ways.
