I found Keiko's Journey a moving memoir written from the unique perspective of a young girl born in Japan to a Japanese American mother and a father in the Japanese Navy during WWII. There Keiko - her name Americanized to "Kay" by her fifth grade teacher - describes what it felt like for a very successful student from Japan to speak and understand little of the language of her English-speaking classmates and teacher...something that so many immigrants from around the globe continue to experience. A special joy of this story, for me, is the detailed descriptions that reveal the cultural values and creative resilience of family members. Keiko's own resilience, creating a life in America with energy and purpose, filled with generosity and gratitude for her family's sacrifices and support, is an inspiring story in our increasingly global community.
A very private journey of memories in which one can experience joy, pain, excitement, shame, fear, apprehension,anticipation, compassion--the gamut of emotions Keiko feels. It's a very poignant reminder of the past and a guide for the future. I applaud Kay and thank her for sharing.
I couldn't put it down! A fascinating look at life from the perspective of a young girl growing up in Japan during World War 2, and her subsequent journey to America. A must read for historical perspective. I finished the book feeling very inspired.

I loved this book! Keiko's Journey grabs your attention with its compelling perspective and descriptive details of life in Japan during WWII. It is both well-written and moving. I really related to Keiko's strong bond with her dog, Shiro. Definitely an important story worth reading!
What an honest and beautifully written book about overcoming the struggles of war, oppression, family secrets, and loneliness. Kay's story is truly inspiring and enlightening. Her unique point of view is absolutely fascinating.
This was a wonderful book about a very difficult journey. It is an inspirational book and a must read!
