WOW – I wish I’d had read this book years ago! It would have saved me so much time, avoided frustration and embarrassment. This book is a must read, cover to cover, for anyone interested in Aikido training.Beginning students will appreciate the level of detail on fundamental Aikido facts. Experienced students will enjoy the author’s humorous personal anecdotes that most who have trained in a martial art will relate to. The book can serve as a reminder about the reasons behind many of Aikido’s common practices that we simply take for granted. At first, I was confused about the title “An Open Secret†and found it a little cryptic. But reading the book’s introduction, I realized that the title hits the nail on the head! Information in the martial arts is handed out 1 piece at a time. It takes years of training to obtain the knowledge covered in this book. In fact, it can take a lifetime!I bought thee-book for my new Kindle Fire HD and found it choc full of color photographs that make the written information so much easier to understand. There’s just enough background on each topic to give one a solid understanding, not overloading with too much detail. The author’s writing style was easy to follow as he makes sense out of what can be confusing Japanese customs. He uses straightforward directions to navigate these cultural lessons.I appreciated that the information wasn’t dummied down to cartoon like simplicity. Yet the book also doesn’t give esoteric and ambiguous explanations of Aikido principles that can only be understood by a handful of masters. In other words, this book is an “everyman or woman’s†guide to Aikido dojo practices. That is exactly what the author states he wanted to accomplish by writing this book.I liked that the topics were presented in an unbiased manner. After learning that the author had trained in Shin ShinToitsu Aikido (Ki Aikido), I was surprised with the book’s lack of in-depth discussion on “ki†principles. As well as, his keeping a generic approach to the chosen topics. The book intentionally takes on only subjects that cross the various Aikido styles.Aikido is sometimes described as a “thinking man’s†martial art. In my experience, the art attracts almost as many people seeking spiritual enlightenment as those who want a venue for physical contact or feel a need to be proficient in self-defense. The book doesn’t cater to any particular group and takes the viewpoint that people train for their own varied reasons.“An Open Secret†provides an overview of Aikido in the new millennium. Including a nice summary chart of Aikido’s sub-styles. I confess not knowing much about the styles of Aikido other than the one I train in. Now I at least have a basic knowledge. To sum it up, here are An Open Secret’s pros and cons:Pro:• Clear explanations of Japanese customs and how they are used in a non-Japanese dojo• Lots of great photographs• Terrific information on the selection and care of Aiki weapons (jo, bokken, etc.), Aikidogi (uniform) and hakama• Practical training adviceCon:• No Aikido techniques were covered• Little information about “ki†energy or principles• No guidance on how to find a good dojo• Spiritual aspects of Aikido are barely mentionedDespite having a few drawbacks, “An Open Secret†does a great job of providing “must know†training information in an easy to digest format. The author accomplishes his stated objective of serving as a seasoned co-worker showing a newbie the ropes. I wish that I’d had someone like him or a guidebook like this one early in my Aikido training. The book is a terrific value and should be in every Aikidoka’s library. I’m ordering a printed copy for our dojo’s reference library. The book’s true value lies in the tremendous amount of detail it offers to remind one of things frequently done out of blasé routine. For those charged with instructing students, the book serves as a reminder that our students need more than training of technique.I hope that the author, Tony Blomert, will follow up this book with more on the subjects that weren’t touched in “An Open Secret.†Hisclear writing style and in-depth research would be most welcome.
Blomert Sensei provides an invaluable resource for students of Aikido - and at least parts of it could be helpful to other martial artists, as well as to anyone seeking insights into traditional Japanese culture, because of his explanations of the sources and backgrounds of the specific Aikido customs. This handbook is not about techniques, those can be found in almost every other book on Aikido, but those books usually only lightly touch on the things that this book specializes in and gathers into one place, namely, everything else that happens in the dojo. Noting that different dojos vary in their standards and customs, he explains not just one way, but tries to show the full variety of what a student might encounter in whichever dojo he or she may attend.Since some readers seem a little disappointed that the 'open secret' doesn't refer to a 'secret' in actual practice and technique, I would like to mention that Founder Morihei Ueshiba clearly stated that there are no secret techniques in Aikido, and that high skill comes simply from diligent training and practice. There is, in that teaching, a true 'open secret" that can be heard from many of the best and wisest martial artists in many arts from many times: respect the basics, and train constantly. I say "respect" because it can be a natural tendency to get bored with the basics, and yearn to learn complicated fancy techniques seen performed by high-ranking practitioners. So we have to understand that the things taught early, and practiced frequently are actually the most important things, and that's why the teacher does them every time. Also, particularly in "internal arts' that deal with ki/qi (including Aikido) traditional warm-ups can be just as important as the practices of pins and throws in achieving mastery.
You don’t have to possess experience or skill in any of the martial arts to appreciate the wider value of this book. It’s not so much about “how†but “why.†I have always been intrigued by the focus in martial arts on core strength, politeness, and respect – respect both for your opponent and self- respect. This is so unlike many other cultures that succumb to overt, loud, hateful, disrespectful “brawling,†“bar fighting,†and “cowboys and Indians†routines! The Asians truly figured out calmness, control, and being spiritually centered. The lessons and information in this book certainly apply beyond martial arts to Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, not to mention Buddhism. It’s about a way of life.Tony’s discussions on the Aiki spirit, the Aiki way and on Ki Energy are enlightening. It provides a glimpse into how the person skilled in Aikido can also better navigate the “sea of storms†in their everyday lives.
ok
An absolute must read for anyone starting the path. This covers so much material that man people simply do not learn for years. For whatever reason we miss some lessons, this will kick start your training and get you off and moving faster.
