About the Author
Jennifer Liberts grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Agoura, California. She has a BA in English Literature from California State University, and an MFA in Poetry from Columbia University. She has worked as a children's book editor, an English teacher, and an independent bookseller. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her three book-loving children, and an orange cat named Chuck.Mike Jackson is a children’s book illustrator. I did not pay attention to the size in the item description, and did not look at any of the reviews before purchasing, so I was VERY surprised when I first saw the package. These books are VERY small. That being said, after the initial shock wore off, I think they might be just perfect for little hands. Yes, the books are small to me, but I didn’t purchase them for me, I bought them for my 5 and 6 year olds. The covers seem sturdy, and the pages are of good quality. When you start book 1, there are just a few words on each page, perfect for brand new beginning readers. I love how each new book introduces a new phonics rule, along with new sight words, blending sounds, and Paw Patrol words so they are learning more and more words as they go, all while reinforcing ones they’ve already learned. As your kids progress through the books they get a little bit harder and have more words on each page. I also like how at the beginning of the book it lists the new words they will be learning, so you can practice with your child before they start to read the story. All in all, I give these books 2 thumbs up!! My kids are both very excited to start reading them, and even though my newly 5-year-old hasn’t started reading yet, she loves ALL THINGS PAW PATROL, and is just as excited for them as my new reader. These books are TINY, flimsy, and about 5 pages per book. I am extremely disappointed based on the quality BUT each book comes out to be about .70 cents and I guess my hopes shouldn't be so high. With that said it's not that bad of a deal for reinforcing short vowel and long vowel sounds and blends. In my photo is a "step into reading" book I purchased from Target (left) to show a size comparison to the books received in the set (right). My intention was to give as a Christmas gift but maybe will just save as a stocking stuffer...
Perfect for the beginning reader. Emphasizing vowel sounds per each book. It's very hard to find very beginner phonic book sets for the new reader. My son is 5 and I've looked for months before purchasing. These are perfect. Short and full of pre k, kindergarten, and first site words. I'm not sure what these other ppl are talking about.Of course they are small. They are supposed to be small kid size. Yes, a little flimsy but I wasn't expecting a hardback! It's paper for goodness sake. Ppl need to get a grip. You're getting like 10 or 12 little books! I thought they are lovely and working great for us.
I preordered these books for my Paw Patrol loving son. I thought because the books were of his favorite characters they would hold his attention and help him learn to read. Unfortunately these are extremely small and aren't exciting at all. Each book has a short story, one sentence & one picture per page, with 6 pages total. They are paper and are 5" x 5" in size. The images are ok and the writing is in line with phonics books but the size of it is really small and paper is flimsy. The box they come in is probably the best feature of the set, although it has a cardboard filler so the books don't fit perfectly on their own. Compared to the cost of book sets that are higher quality (like The Amazing Machines by Tony Mitton & Ant Parker - $16) it makes sense that these are less than $9. At the end of the day I would have paid more for a nicer quality book and would avoid cheap book sets in the future. Unfortunately it costs more than 1/2 the cost to return (at $4.98) so I'll be keeping it.
I know a few reviews complaining of the size of these books and that they are so small and stories are short . In my opinion, you want a learning reader to stay interested . Short attention spans in younger children - they might get bored if the books were longer. It's only my opinion of course and everyone is different . Also my 3 year old daughter loves everything "Paw Patrol" so these were perfect for her.
These are small books... as all of the phonics sets like this are. See the box these come in pictured next to a spoon in the image I've included.These are nice little books for a Paw Patrol fan and a good way to get your kid interested in starting to read.What I don't like about these books is that they are for very beginner readers who are still working on phonics sounds, CVC words and starting blends....but these little books also have words with blends or long vowel sounds in the first books of the set. Kids will probably need help with them.For example, in book 2 "short e", you will find harder to read words like "friends, needs, ready, does, their"
We ordered these books for my son to practice his reading. Up to this point he has only read simple books sent home by his kindergarten teacher. The first book he struggled with a bit and then got discouraged because there were several words that were not familiar. The second night he felt more confident after completing the whole book and was looking forward to the next book. I really like that at the beginning of each book there is a list of "sound" words that are in that specific book. Reviewing those really helps my son before he starts a new book. Also, it is nice that the books are not too long...my son has a very short attention span and probably could not handle anything longer at this time. We are almost through the whole set and he has really enjoyed sitting down to read the books each night.
This is a really cool book set. On the first page of each book, it lists the sight words that will be mentioned in the story as well as certain characters names. I have my son tell me the letters in each words and the sounds they make. He does get frustrated because he wants to get to the story but slowly, he is becoming able to recognize words and sound them out if they are new to him.The actual stories are pretty short, maybe 5 pages each with a couple short sentences on each page. It does take a while to get through the books because we spend most of the time on the sight word page.I would recomend these sets to parents who are teaching their kids to read.
