Even though I know NOTHING about flying or planes, I found this book so amazing. It was as if I were beside Ron in the airplane, seeing everything he saw in exactly the way he saw it! He has such a way with words that he I could hardly put the book down. BT

Runway Dust by Charles R. FurdenThere was a time between World War II, Korean War and the Jet Age where general aviation consisted small airport spread all over the country. A time when aircraft of the Golden Age of Aviation were nothing more than, mostly forgotten, old cheap airplanes. A time when WWII and Korean War warbirds were cheap and plentiful and could be found at most airports. This was a time when the predominate training airplanes had tail wheels and 65HP engines. Sky King was flying a surplus “Bamboo Bomber,” the Cessna 310 was barely off the drawing board, all metal single engine airplanes with nose wheels were more unusual than routine. This is the setting for Mr. Furden’s “Runway Dust.” It is the story of a young man’s passion to learn to fly, work around airplanes, and hang out with aviation people. It is the story of one small central Utah airport that no longer exists. It is a fun book that tells the story many of us can completely relate to from our own experiences with airports of this type and time period. Many who read this book lived these stories or stories much like them. People too young for the wars but exposed to the aviators of the “Greatest Generation” who experienced the wars and worked hard to remain in aviation after the wars.It is hard for us to imagine a time when WACOs, Staggerwings, C-45s, AT-50s, BT-13 were not only not collectable, but actually available at bargain basements prices. In those days, military airplane were often sold for a price less than the value of the fuel in their fuel tanks. In these days, the Cessna 180 and the Beech Bonanza were the “high performance’ airplanes.Mr. Furden relates first person experiences during his earliest years in aviation and the waning years of the airport he operated from. The stories are often biographical in nature, yet the book is not a biography. This book is a terrific read and will be enjoyed by anyone who yearns for the simpler world of the old days in aviation when avgas had a zero and a dot before the price.

If you have J-3/J-4 time in the high desert country you'll smile throughout this tale of what simple flying was like 'back in the day'. If you don't, read it and imagine what freedom you missed. Dawn, elbow out the window, an' smellin' fresh cut alfalfa -- be there.

This book brought back memories of my first airplane ride about 60 years ago when I was in the 4th grade in Casper Wyoming. I was one of the students in school and we went on a field trip to the airport. I don't remember the model but think that it was a Cessna 172. I was one of the taller of the students and was able to sit right seat up front, after that flight I always wanted to fly but never thought that I could afford to get a plane. If I had been older I would have loved to have been able to work at a small airport like Utah Central. The book is a great read and lets you see how aviation used to be, not mired down in regulations as it is today.VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READ!!!

I've read just about every book available about personal experiences in general aviation. This one is the best.

I have just retired from 30 some odd years of working at a small general aviation airport. When I started work in 1977, there were still some folks around who remembered the good old days of aviation which Mr Furden so skillfully writes about. I too, have flown a Piper Cub, and I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Mr Furden. If you want to know what small airport aviation was like in America up until the early 70's, you will enjoy reading this book.

A must read for anyone who enjoys aviation. It is a wonderfully detailed collection of events from a long forgotten era of aviation. The golden age of aviation where local airports were hangouts for old men and young boys dreaming of flight.

A very well written book. I felt as if I was flying beside him. Every sentence, every word. Great detailed descriptions. Awesome book for pilots and those interested in flying.
